PAINTED MONASTERIES

Byzantine Treasure of Bucovina

        DESCRIPTION:

These painted monasteries are the representative image of Bucovina and an attraction you don’t want to miss, being special for their architectural style. Most of them date from the 15th and 16th centuries and were built by local rulers. Amongst all monasteries, 8 of them, best preserved, were chosen to be part of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites in 1993. The most beautiful monasteries we will visit are Voronet, Moldovita, Sucevita, and Putna.

     COMPLETE TOUR:

1. The Suceava Fortress was part of a fortified defense system built in Moldova at the end of the 14th century when the Ottoman threat started looming over the territory.

2. The Bucovina Village Museum is a spacious open-air museum located in the city of Suceava, imitating the appearance of a traditional Bucovina village.

3. Voronet Monastery is the only painted monastery that has had an internationally recognized color associated with it - 'Voronet Blue'. The place of worship was built by the ruler Ştefan cel Mare (Stephen the Great) - on the ruins of an old Moldovan-style church destroyed by fire.

4. Moldovita Monastery is one of the eight painted churches from Romania included on the UNESCO Heritage List, all masterpieces inspired by the Byzantine art of the 15th and 16th centuries.

5. Sucevita Monastery was built in the last decades of the 16th century, at the expense of the entire boyar Movila family, Ieremia being the ruler of Moldavia between the years 1595-1606.

6. Putna Monastery - "The Jerusalem of the Romanian people". The first and most important monastery founded by Stephen the Great.

OPTIONAL:

7. Mocanita Hutulca - Going through the unspoiled landscapes of Bucovina, this steam train line was open for use in 1888, when it was used for forestry transport. Now you can travel on this line and can enjoy traditionally prepared local cuisine during the ride.

8. Vama painting eggs museum - The museum boasts a unique collection of over 7,000 eggs gathered from across the globe. These eggs have been decorated with various techniques and mediums, including eggshells, wood, ceramics, porcelain, stone, and glass, making it an unparalleled exhibit.

9. Marginea Village - The Black Ceramics of Marginea - visit the black pottery workshop.
